The Burma Road: Then and Now
March 15th, 2008 | by This is China! |Danwei has a recent post The Burma Road to Yunnan with newsreel footage of the road connecting China with Southeast Asia during World War II, the so-called Burma Road. Firstly, I love newsreels, especially those illustrating Chinese history during the last tumultuous century. Newsreels also provide a context for understanding a society’s motivation for some of the things it says and does, whether right or wrong.
Watching the newsreel put me in mind of the intrepid Andy Scott’s trip a couple months ago through almost the same region. You can see photos of his excursion from Yunnan into Southeast Asia at the China Briefing News post Southeast China looks to Asia, but roads continue to hinder development.
Compare and contrast.

One of my granduncle was a truck driver on that Burma road during the war. The stories about that road were amazing, to say the least.
