Good Ole’ Boy Has His Hands Full in Shenzhen
February 27th, 2008 | by This is China! |The China Economic Review recently reported that an old buddy of Hu Jintao, Liu Yupu, will be the new Party Chief in Shenzhen.
Analysts say Liu must deal with three major issues facing the Pearl River Delta boom town: upgrading its electronics industry, attracting new talent and maintaining industrial advantages despite rising costs. Other concerns over Shenzhen’s lack of new land for expansion and poor transport infrastructure have also been voiced.
“Analysts” would add (me being an “Analyst” and all) that Liu also needs to clean up the city’s image (and reality) as a Den of Iniquity (you younger readers and ESL speakers will have to look that one up), a sort of modern-day Sodom to Guangzhou’s Gomorrah. If he can get to the root of that issue, the rest will resolve itself with not too much more effort.
